  USBM Folder 003 Closed.JPG - USBM 75th ANNIVERSARY FOLDER - Contemporary steel folding stick made in 1985 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the US Bureau of Mines, marked on shaft “1910 USBM 1985”, 10 1/4 in. long with a black oxide finish, thimble is held in place by two rivets, a notch in the shaft locks the hook when opened, unlocking the hook to return it to the folded position in the handle is accomplished by pulling the two halves of the shaft apart until the hook can disengage from the notch, hook and thimble spiked shaft 6 3/4 in. long, as new [Founded on May 16, 1910, through the Organic Act (Public Law 179), to deal with a wave of catastrophic mine disasters, the mission of the Bureau of Mines expanded over the years to include the conduct of research to enhance the safety, health, and environmental impact of mining as well as the collection , analysis and dissemination of information about mining and the impact of proposed mining laws on the national interest.  The stick shown here was issued in 1985 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the USBM. However, 10 years later in September 1995, Congress voted to close the Bureau of Mines and to transfer certain functions to other federal agencies. With USBM's closure, almost $100 million, or 66%, of its 1995 programs ceased, and approximately 1,000 of its employees were dismissed.]
